Making Use Of Jerry Can Containers For Fuel
Jerry can containers may be made of plastic or metal. You can buy them in different widths and sizes. Capacities come in five to 20 litres. You need to remember that the bigger ones can get to be quite heavy for you to lift for pouring. You also have to use a siphon pump or funnel. A jerry cans is specially designed to store fuel.
Jerry cans can be bought from fishing, camping, and boating stores, automotive, hardware, and caravan accessory stores.
There are several rugged plastic 20 litre red fuel cans that have been designed. Some have two longer handles to make carrying when full and pouring it a lot easier. The diameter of the fuel can’s neck has been increased to let the filler nozzle at service stations fit into it to reduce the chances of spillage or overflow. Jerry cans have also been made to fit a standard sized 4WD rack. Be sure that you pick up the smooth-sided one as it will fit better into a common jerry can holder. You can purchase some very durable twenty litre jerry cans.
If you’ll be separating different fuels into their own jerry can containers, place coded fuel tags on them. Leaded (White), diesel (Brown), unleaded (Red) and two stroke (Yellow).
There is always an element of risk when carrying fuel.
Fuel should never be carried in a vehicle or stored in any living area, if stowed on a caravan or trailer, do so in secured, rigid, and protected positions.
A jerry can holder made of metal is the ideal way of securing the cans to a camper trailer or caravan. As there are fuels that are combustible upon impact, these holders shouldn’t be placed at the rear of the RV or wherever it may be vulnerable to accidental impact.
If you really have to carry jerry cans with extra fuel, it’s recommended you don’t carry them part full. Having your vehicle’s fuel tank upgraded to a long range tank is another alternative you can take instead of carrying jerry cans.
Safely Filling Jerry Cans
Static electricity can build up between the vehicle driver or passenger and the seat and you will often notice you will get a small electric shock as you touch something metal when exiting the vehicle. This is what is called a static discharge. If the first thing you make contact with is a fuel nozzle, a spark can cause the fuel vapours nearby to burn. Don’t go back into the vehicle to get your wallet until after you finish the fill as you might pick up static electricity again.
Refueling should never be done in a confined area and turn the vehicle or any operating machinery off. Keep mobile telephones or anything that might ignite away from jerry cans or fuel dispensing nozzles and don’t smoke either. Fuel vapors can be ignited.
Wait until after you have totally emptied the fuel from the jerry can into your tank, and then it’s advised to leave the can open for as long as possible in the sun to let the vapors from the remaining fuel evaporate and let the can dry. Allow the empty can to cool down, before replacing the lid and try to keep empty jerry cans out of direct sun and heat.
When refilling the jerry can, refill it to the top. Air expands about three times as much as gasoline, and a part full can will be at a risk of much higher pressure than a full can. Be careful in opening jerry cans, keep the opening away from you when you release the cap as fuel may spurt out.
